Deadly car accidents occur every day. While motor vehicles have gotten safer, there may be no way to totally eliminate the possibility of fatal auto accidents.
You can reduce your risk of fatal injuries in a crash:
- Wear a seatbelt. Seatbelts are absolutely critical to reducing the severity of injury in a wreck. According to the CDC, most drivers and passengers killed in accidents are not wearing seat belts (53 percent in 2009). Seat belts reduce the risk of death by 45 percent for drivers and front-seat passengers. Unrestrained occupants are 30 times more likely to get ejected from the vehicle in a crash. The CDC says seat belts saved 13,000 lives in 2009 (the latest year in which they collected these types of statistics).
- Obey speed limits. Speeding is involved in roughly one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Drive the posted speed limit – or the safe speed for inclement weather – because speeding makes it more difficult to handle your vehicle, increases the time needed to slow or stop, and decreases the effectiveness of safety equipment.
- Don’t drive impaired. Drunk driving causes about 30 people to die in traffic accidents every day, according to the NHTSA.
- Don’t drive distracted. Distracted driving was responsible for about 2,800 fatalities in 2018, according to the NHTSA. Texting, daydreaming, eating, personal grooming, reading, adjusting audio – all of these things and more are distracting and can cause a serious car crash.
- Keep a calm, level head. Reckless, aggressive driving is another potent cause of accidents. Angry motorists may be more likely to speed, change lanes suddenly, tailgate and otherwise engage in risky driving behaviors. Take a breath, focus on the task of driving and proceed calmly through traffic.
